Being a Big is easy! Your Little can join you in the kinds of activities you already like to do!

With as little as four hours a month, you can change a young person’s life. Depending on the Big Brothers Big Sisters program you’re choose, you will meet your Little at his or her school or in the community. Learn more about our programs.

Volunteer Orientation and Training

Come see what being a Big is all about! We will answer your questions about the types of children we serve, the program expectations, your role as a Big and much more!

Attendance at the Volunteer Orientation/Training is required for volunteers in the Des Moines metro area before you can be matched with a Little.

The orientation/training for potential volunteers is scheduled for Tuesday evenings from 6-8pm at the West Des Moines Public Library (4000 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, IA) and Saturday mornings from 10:15am-12:15pm at the Johnston Public Library (6700 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, IA)

How to apply

• The easiest and fastest way to get started is to Sign Up Now!
• Once you submit your application or interest in becoming a Big, a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member will contact you. As part of the enrollment process you’ll be asked to:
  • Complete a formal written application.
  • Submit to a criminal history record check, DOT and Child Abuse Registry checks.
  • Provide at least 3 references
  • Attend an in-person interview
